In the play, Yeshua Ha-Nozri is under trial for trying to destroy a temple. Still, Yeshua tells Hegemon that all he said was that old faith is dying, and a new faith shall begin in its place. However, this does not convince Hegemon, but things change when Yeshua says he knows about Hegemon’s constant headaches and that he will get rid of the ailment soon. As the actors practice, a few men remove the set and inform the team that the play will no longer occur.
To find answers, Master visits the theatre manager Stephan, who has isolated himself after getting drunk every day. However, Master meets Mikhail, the play’s editor, in the building and promises to sort out the issue. A council meeting is held, and Master’s novel and play are up for debate.
According to the council members, Pilate goes against what the government is working towards and also discusses faith and Christ. The piece of literature seems dangerous, according to the council. The council gives Master a chance to change the writings in the book. Mikhail, who had previously agreed to support Master, changes his words and decides to take the work off the shelves.
Annoyed, the Master does not agree to change anything in his work and leaves the council meeting. Outside, Master’s friend and screenwriter Aloizy asks Master to develop safer writing to get the council off his back. At the Jazz event that night, Master takes Gala to the event as promised. Soon, however, Master was banished from the Union of Writers committee.
Who inspires Master to write again?
As Master walks outside, he meets a German named Woland, and they begin to converse. Through the conversation, Master learns that Woland is visiting Russia to learn about the Soviet experiments. Woland also says he has not come across any other country that spreads atheism like Russia. As they discuss, Master thinks it’s an excellent plot for a story about a devil that nobody believes in visiting Moscow. Before leaving, Woland advises Master to write not because it can be published but instead to write so it can be re-published. The next day, during a parade, Master meets a beautiful woman, Margarita, and they go for a walk. As they talk, Master tells Margarita about an idea he has for a book, and Margarita wants to hear about it.
They walk on Patriarch’s pond, and Master tells about the two characters in his story, Mikhail, the editor, and his companion Ivan (Ivan from the psychiatric hospital makes it to Master’s story). The story has Mikhail and Ivan talking about Christ and other religions as hoaxes when they are interrupted by Woland, a devil who has not revealed it to them yet. Wanting to join the conversation, Woland tries to convince Mikhail and Ivan about the existence of God. But the duo argue that humans are in control of everything they do. In response, Woland asks about the accidents that caused humans to die. Now Woland scares them as he says Mikhail will die with his head getting cut off.
After listening to Woland, Mikhail asks Ivan to keep an eye on Woland and runs towards a phone booth to call someone and get help. As Mikhail runs, he slips on spilled oil and falls. At that moment, a tram approaches and cuts Mikhail’s head. Master is yet to figure out the rest of the story. Margarita encourages him to continue writing. Blown away by Margarita’s beauty, Master tells Margarita where he lives and asks her to visit. However, Margarita says she is married.
The story continues when Ivan finds Mikhail. He is afraid of Woland and runs around the town trying to catch him. To get help, Ivan enters the jazz event and tries to convince the other writers about how Mikhail died, but nobody believes him. In the psychiatric ward, Master tells Ivan that he had met Satan in Patriarch’s Pond. Ivan thinks everything Master is saying happened to him in real life.
What happens to Stephan in Master’s story?
A year ago, Margarita arrived at Master’s door and took him by surprise. Now, Margarita is curious about the progress Master has made with his story and reads the parts leading up to Mikhail’s death. The story continues with Pontius Pilate, where three out of four prisoners await the decision to know who will be executed. The Hegemon wants to execute Bar-Raban, but his advisors persuade him to save Bar-Raban and execute Ha-Nozri in Bar-Raban’s place. However, after reading the manuscript, Margarita finds the Pilate parts a bit weird, but she is curious to see how the story ends.
Suddenly, Master gets a call from the theatre. On the way there, Master shows an apartment building. He tells Margarita that the apartment has a strange reputation for people disappearing from inside. The story continues, and Stephan has a terrible hangover. When he opens his eyes, Woland provides Stephan with breakfast. Woland comes with a request to perform at the theatre, and Stephan steps out to call the management about it.

As soon as Stephan returns, he sees Woland and his people relaxing inside the house. As there are many people inside the apartment, Woland, and the team decide to get rid of Stephan. Subsequently, they push Stephan, and Stephan falls and wakes up in a psychiatric hospital. At the theatre, the management gives money to Master for the loss he incurred because of Pilate. They also give him tickets to a musical.
Are Master and Margarita in love?
The following day, the Master prepares a meal for Margarita, and they slowly dance to music. After a while, the Master expresses his desire to see Margarita naked, and she complies. They sleep together. Eventually, Margarita becomes like a wife to the Master, spending time with him during the day and going back to her husband at night.
One day, Margarita sees Latunsky’s article. She is infuriated and storms off to teach him a lesson. As Margarita is leaving, Aloizy arrives, and the story continues. Now, Ha-Nozri is getting executed, and Hegemon wants to bury him in a secret place. Furthermore, Hegemon is sure that Judas will be stabbed that day and asks his men to handle the situation. Now Aloizy knows Master’s story as well.
What happens during the musical?
Since Master does not have anyone to go to the musical with, he invites Woland to join him. They are enjoying the show, and Woland steps away for a minute and joins his crew on the stage. The crew then tells the people about black magic and séance, and they start performing. In the first act, one of the crew members shoots at a big ball blindfolded, and money falls all over the theatre. The people present there start grabbing as much money as they can. Next, they have a showcase of extraordinary dresses and accessories and transform people by giving them a new makeover. It seems this is part of Master’s story, as the musical served as an inspiration.
How did Master end up in a psychiatric hospital?
The next night, Margarita expresses that she wants to come clean with her husband and end things with him so she can be with Master. However, Master tells Margarita that won’t work well for him, so Margarita hands him two tickets to leave the city and run away from their lives. The next day, Woland listens to Master’s story and takes him to a party for inspiration. At the party, Master gets drunk and enjoys himself with Woland. They head back to Master’s house. Inspired, Master knows how to finish the novel and begins to write but suddenly hears someone banging on the door.
When people continue to bang at the door, Woland thinks the people outside are here for Master’s manuscript, so Master burns his book. The cops investigate Master and tell him that Margarita is the one who ratted him out. When Master says he was with Woland at the party, they think he is unhinged as he was seen alone at the party.
Master is sent to prison, and Woland visits Him, encouraging him to finish the book for Margarita. Later, Mikhail visits Master, tells him he will be welcomed back into the Union of Writers, and advises him not to sacrifice himself. Master responds that Mikhail will be sacrificed at Satan’s ball. Following this incident, authorities transfer Master to the psychiatric hospital.
At the hospital, the nurse sneaks in pencil and paper so Master can write his story. Even though Master is getting shock treatment and other treatments, he finishes his book. He asks the nurse to give Margarita the book if she ever visits. Meanwhile, Margarita looks for Master and finds Aloizy in Master’s house and realizes Aloizy is the one who told the cops about Master’s book. Worried, Margarita arrives at the hospital but can’t meet Master. However, the nurse recognizes Margarita and gives her the book.
The Master and Margarita (2024) Movie Ending Explained:
Is Margarita free in Master’s story?

After getting the book, Margarita reads the story. In the story, Margarita visits the places Master, and she went to on the day they met. While sitting on the bench, an officer arrives and gives her a cream. At home, Margarita applies the cream and becomes invisible. Having found freedom, Margarita flies around town and visits the place. But the officer asks her to be at a specific place that night. As requested, Margarita is naked, walks into a room, and finds herself in front of Woland. As Woland relaxes, he calls Margarita his queen, and she accepts the position.
The crew is happy and dresses her up in the queen’s attire as there is a full-moon ball. The cunning and vicious people will be attending, and Margarita is their queen. As people keep coming, Margarita gets tired, but she plays her role well. Towards the end, Mikhail’s head is brought in a box. Using his powers, Woland turns Mikhail’s head into a chalice, brings in Baron Meigel, kills him, and Woland drinks his blood.
After drinking the blood, he offers it to Margarita. She drinks it and immediately falls unconscious. After the ball, Margarita wakes up after a long time. Woland asks her what she wants, but Margarita doesn’t want anything. Luckily, this was a test, and she passed. Margarita asks Woland to reunite her with her lover, Master, and Woland grants her wish.
As Margarita and Master kiss, officers arrive at the room. However, don’t find anyone except the cat. As they try to catch the cat, they light the place on fire. From afar, the crew watches the city burn. Once they fulfill all their duties, they disappear. Now Margarita and Master are together, and in the end, Woland says I’m a part of the world that produces good while scheming evil.
In the end, Woland’s story is about the underworld, Kings, and Queens. As Woland says, good comes out of bad schemes. The story reflects the emotions Master is going through after being banished by his writer community and the unfairness he deals with in the real world. It also reflects human greed, as seen through Woland and the team’s performance, as people behave like animals to get free things.
The film also explores the repressed creative freedom in societies, especially in a country like Russia. The oppression of freedom of expression can never offer a complete picture of a society or culture. The Master uses faith as an example to show how society does not accept different beliefs and how everything is controlled. Through his book “The Master and Margarita,” Master writes about Gods, the Devil, faith, and fantasy-like things, which is unacceptable in reality.
